Course Description
Digital Literacy I
Upon successful completion of this course the student will:
1. Understand the basic layout of a library and its print resources for their personal research,
and informational usage as well as their library work assignments.
2. Describe and use basic computer functions and correct computer terminology.
3. Explain the difference between application, operating system, and utility software.
4. Identify and differentiate between various storage computer capabilities including the
cloud.
5. Use Microsoft application software packages to prepare basic documents, spreadsheets,
and presentations
6. Use basic Web 2.0 tools to gather, create, analyze, and collaborate.
7. Demonstrate the use of the appropriate research techniques to locate information on the
Internet, and assess the reliability of the information source.
8. Identify and analyze ethical issues such as plagiarism, cyber bulling and security
as related to computing.
9. Improve keyboarding skills and techniques.
- Introduces students to the three components of digital literacy needed for a 21st century learner: Computer Literacy, Media Literacy, Information Literacy.
- Introduces and familiarizes students with essential computer concepts and terminology including operating systems, software, hardware, applications and peripherals. (Computer Literacy)
- Introduces and familiarize students to online skills for research using the BIG6, Web browsing, and Internet research. (Media Literacy)
- Introduces and familiarizes students on the basics of information retrieval and the evaluation of online resources. (Information Literacy)
- Teaches the basic productive programs to increase competencies in word processing, spreadsheets, and presentations.
- Introduces and familiarize students to web based productive applications and presentations by assigning online projects.
- Daily keyboard assignments are provided for students to master touch typing. Emphasis is placed on development of accuracy and speed and proper techniques.
